Stories and Myths

Hauntings, myths, legends, traditions and just really good stories are everywhere on the Heidelberg Campus. Surely you have some to share.

A Secret Kept and Now Revealed
I’m not sure who had the idea first, but we agreed that it was worth doing— probably during a game of Hearts in Founders Hall. TPing, or covering trees with toilet paper was common enough, but our plan was a bit more daring. We intended to TP the inside of Beeghly Library. I worked the night shift at the front desk that Friday and was responsible for locking up. At that point there was no alarm system in the building. My co-conspirators, Becky Metzler and Judy Holdsworth, hid in the woman’s room and on my rounds before locking the front door, I “missed” them. They waited and later that night, spread a dozen or so rolls of TP around the library, especially on the stairways and under the central dome.
I was on the Saturday morning shift at the library and met the Reference Librarian, Miss Sattler at the front door as she arrived to open for the day. After surveying the mess, we called Mr. Bennett, the head librarian at home. He rushed in half dressed and without stopping at the desk made a beeline to his open office and took down a book from behind his desk. He opened it to reveal that it was a hollow book containing the petty cash.
As I recall it now, just over fifty years later, he did call the police and the Dean, but I don’t remember being questioned, but I do remember helping to clean up the mess. I only wish I had a picture!
